Elisir di Rose (Elixir of rose)
Typical of the nineteenth-century tradition, the Elixir of Rose is a liqueur with a rose syrup base: the one used for the Elixir is produced on a small organic farm outside Florence. The rose used was once called ‘rosa dell’orto’ because it was planted around the borders of vegetable gardens, or it was known as ‘rosa maggese’ because it flowers only once a year, in May. It lends a pleasant scent to fruit salads, sorbets, ice cream, and tea, both hot and cold. Excellent as an aperitif served with chilled white wine, preferably dry, or with spumante or rum.
